[Harry Potter] Divination, Gen, G

Title: Divination
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: G
Word Count: 909
Disclaimer: While I can claim credit for the original character and her background, I cannot claim credit for the rest of it. Damn.
Summary: Clarissa Wilhelm and one of her Divination lessons.
Notes: Written for a Gryffindor Dare over at hogwartsishome.

Professor Clarissa Wilhelm had been teaching Divination at Hogwarts for the better part of thirty years. She was a genuine Seer, as was her mother, and grandmother, and so on in her family for the last hundred years. She loved teaching, every aspect of it, and she loved her students. The class she had this particular morning was a group of third year Gryffindors and Slytherins.

It made her sad to see a few of them, as she had done readings for them in her spare time, and knew their sad fates. Pushing that to the back of her mind for the moment, she addressed the class as she always did. With a smile and warm hello.

“Today, my children, we will be studying the art of palmistry. Now, if you open your text to page two hundred sixty-three, you will find a diagram that will help you as you study your partner’s palm.” She waited as they got out their books, and when she sensed they were ready, she continued. “The main lines you want to be looking for are the heart, head, and life lines.”

She walked around her desk to the blackboard and pointed out the correct lines on the diagram she’d drawn. “Despite the name, the life line does not, in fact, show the length of life, but rather the quality of the life you may lead.” She pointed to the life line on the depiction of what only she knew to be her own palm. “You see here how this life line is solid? This shows that this person will have a good, full life with pleasing rewards.”

With her wand, she altered the life line on the diagram so that it was broken in places. “A broken or waving life line can indicate a weakness, either mental or physical.”

“Professor?” A young redhead, Lily Evans, raised her hand.

“Yes, Miss Evans?”

The young girl was staring at her own palm, her brows knit together. “What if your lifeline splits at the end? What does that mean?”

Clarissa felt a pang in her chest, as Miss Evans was one of the students she’d done a reading on. But still she smiled, and said, “What does your textbook say it means?”

Quickly, she looked down at her book and followed the lines with her finger until she’d found the correct spot. “If the lifeline finishes in a fork, it shows that the person will depend on the kindness of others in their old age.” Looking up, Lily smiled. “Well, that’s good, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is good,” Clarissa said softly. Taking a breath, she raised her voice to address the class. “For your lesson, you are to take turns attempting to read your partner’s palm, and write down your interpretations of the reading. I will be walking around the room, assisting if needed.” She looked over at a few of her students that she knew would try to skive off the note-taking, and said, “Make sure you take full, accurate notes on your reading, as the homework for tonight is to write at least ten-inches on today’s lesson, and your thoughts on the art of palmistry.”

She accepted the groans with a pleasant smile, and let them get to work. As she circled the room, she was pleased to see that most of them seemed to catch on quickly, though a few were getting the heart and head lines confused. She corrected when she needed to, but for the most part just observed.

After the lesson was over and she had dismissed them, she sat down at her desk and just enjoyed the silence. She loved teaching, and always would, but there were times when she just needed the quiet, and the subtle scent of sage that had been there since she herself was a student.

“Professor Wilhelm?”

She looked up and was surprised to see Severus Snape in her doorway. “Yes, Severus?”

He walked up to her desk and said, “My partner told me that there was something wrong with my heart line. Is it true?”

Clarissa pursed her lips. Some of the students could be so cruel in these lessons. “Well, let’s see,” she said, and smiled as she motioned for his hand. He held it out and she looked over his palm. His heart line was a common one, actually, starting just under the mount of Saturn. “What did your partner say was wrong with it?”

“He… he said it meant I was never going to find love and that I would die alone,” Severus said, frowning.

Sighing, she shook her head, and traced the line with her finger. “That is not what this means. And you can be sure I will have a talk with your partner for saying such things.” The boy said nothing, so she interpreted for him. “The heart line that starts just under the middle finger, or the mount of Saturn, shows that you will probably have only one true love and that it will last a lifetime.”

Severus nodded, and thanked her before quickly walking out. She sighed again as the door closed behind him, and got up to make herself a cup of tea. The next lesson was going to be trying, as she has Ravenclaws. Not all of them were adverse to her subject, but a few of the older years had openly mocked her choice of profession, and taking points only did so much.

So she took a deep breath, enjoyed her tea, and prepared for another lesson.

[Harry Potter] Can't Resist A Dare, Sirius gen, G

Title: Can't Resist A Dare
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: G
Disclaimer: Oh, however much I want to claim them, they belong to the lovely Ms. Rowling.
Word Count: 186
Summary: Sirius is dared to sing a song at the Ministry Christmas Ball.
Notes: Written for a Gryffindor Dare over at hogwartsishome.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

James was relentless. “You’re the one who chose dare, Pads. You have to do it.”

“Well, yeah, I know that,” Sirius said, irritated. “But in the Ministry? In front of everyone? I never thought you could be that cruel, James Potter.” He sighed. “If I weren’t the one subject to public humiliation, I’d be proud.”

That was how he found himself at the Ministry Christmas party, on stage, microphone in hand. He took a deep breath, cursed James, and nodded to the pianist. As the first notes were played, he could hear laughter from somewhere in the crowd, and winked in their direction.

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified,” he sang, and put everything he had into the song. He danced across that stage like he owned it, and when it was over, he bowed low to uproarious applause. As he jumped down, James walked up to him, laughing his head off.

“I honestly did not think you had it in you, Gloria.”

Sirius grinned. “That’s Miss Gaynor to you, and you should know by now that no Gryffindor can ever resist a dare.”

[Harry Potter] Amortentia, Remus/Sirius pre-slash, PG

Title: Amortentia
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Remus/Sirius pre-slash
Rating: G
Word Count: 831
Disclaimer: They are the property of Jo Rowling and Warner Bros. I make no moneys. :(
Summary: Sixth Year Potions class brews a special potion, with interesting results.
Notes: Written for a Gryffindor Dare over at hogwartsishome.

The Sixth year Gryffindors and Slytherins filed into the Potions classroom and went to their assigned tables. Professor Slughorn was at his desk, sniffing at a smoking cauldron and sighing wistfully. Sirius and James exchanged a confused look as they got out their textbooks.

“What do you think is in the cauldron?” Sirius whispered. James shrugged, and was about to say something, but Slughorn stood and rounded his desk at that moment.

“Today, class, we will be studying a particular favorite of mine,” the professor said. “Amortentia is the strongest and, according to most Potions masters, the most dangerous love potion known to Wizard kind.” Excited murmurs broke out, but Slughorn raised his hand and all fell silent. “You will be brewing this potion today, and recording your experiences with it in a twelve-inch essay due next class.”

Sirius and James both groaned, while Lily, who was sitting directly in front of them with Remus, raised her hand. “Professor,” she started cautiously, “If Amortentia is such a dangerous potion, how are you allowed to let us drink it? You’d lose your job, I’d think.”

Professor Slughorn smiled widely. “An excellent question, Miss Evans. And an astute observation. I would, in fact, be sacked, and sent to Azkaban for that matter, if I were to allow any of my students to ingest Amortentia. However, you will not be drinking it, only smelling it.” At everyone’s confused look, he elaborated. “Amortentia, when drunk, causes obsession in the drinker. But if it is inhaled only, it gives off a smell unique only to the person smelling it. This smell is to remind that person of the things they find most attractive.”

Sirius shuddered as he, again, wondered what it was exactly the professor could smell from the potion on his desk. As he and James began working on their potion, he leaned over and said, “So what exactly do you think it will smell like?”

“You heard old Horace, mate,” James replied and he cut ingredients. “It’s different for everyone.”

“True, and we all know you’ll smell Evans’ shampoo.” Sirius stirred the potion rod as James dropped powder in the cauldron. “I wonder what it’ll be for me…”

The rest of the work was done in silence, partly because they didn’t have anything else to say, but for the most part they were curious about the effects the potion would have, and they wanted to hurry up and get it finished. Remus and Lily were done before they were, so they paused in their work to eavesdrop.

“I smell… it’s almost like sunshine,” Lily muttered, her voice tinged with confusion. “Sunshine and fresh air, mixed with some kind of cologne. Curious.” She wrote it down in her notes and turned to Remus. “What do you smell?”

Sirius raised an eyebrow as Remus jumped. “Er… I smell forest, expensive cologne, and,” he laughed a little, “I guess I’d classify that as wet dog.”

Lily scrunched her nose. “That doesn’t sound very appealing.”

Shrugging, Remus said, “You sort of get used to it after a while.”

Before Sirius could wonder about that, James nudged him. “It’s ready. And it smells like… apples,” he leaned closer to the cauldron, “Ink, and library dust. You?”

Catching himself staring at Remus for no reason, Sirius shook his head and inhaled some of the curling smoke. It was a blend of something so familiar, and he took a deeper breath, trying to differentiate between the scents. It was arousing, and comforting all at once. “Books,” he muttered, closing his eyes. He didn’t see James raise his eyebrows, or Remus turn back sharply to look at him. “Books and chocolate and the Forbidden Forest.”

All things he associated with… he opened his eyes and caught Remus staring at him. James looked back and forth between them awkwardly. He opened his mouth to say something, but just like earlier, Slughorn stood up in the front of the room and ruined the moment.

“Alright, class, remember: I want twelve-inches detailing your experiences with Amortentia. For extra credit, and completely optional, you may include your interpretations on your combination of scents.” He waited patiently as they all cleaned up their stations. Once they were seated again, he smiled and said, “Dismissed.”

Sirius gathered his books and practically ran out of the classroom. He didn’t want to talk to anyone, not until he’d figured everything out. He wasn’t gay, or at least he didn’t think he was gay. He hadn’t really given it much thought in the past, and he didn’t really want to give it any thought now. Sighing, he slowed his pace as he reached Gryffindor Tower. Remus was already in the common room with James, who was not-so-subtly trying to sniff Lily’s hair.

Remus looked over at him and blushed. Later, Sirius would think it was almost cute, but at the moment all he could think about was Potions class. He lifted his hand in a wave and headed up to the dorms to do something he’d never done before. Some serious schoolwork. He had an essay to write.
